Tired of rolling cigars in Cleveland and suffering from coal dust in the air, Simon Altfeld sought relief in the country when he moved to Elyria in 1883. Over 125 years ago, Simon Altfeld started a scrap iron business with a horse and wagon in Elyria, Ohio. Later two of Simon's sons expanded the business into the Elyria Belting & Machinery Company.
Today this company is known as the EBM Group and has two subsidiaries: Bluestar Metal and Aztec Steel Corporation. Bluestar Metal now recycles complete automobiles, thousands of aluminum pop cans each day as well as industrial scrap. Bluestar exports its services as far away as China.
Aztec Steel is currently managed by Robin Altfeld Kaufman and her brother Scott Altfeld. The company employs 21 people and has been in its current location for over 22 years.
